CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Does adding Tyrod Taylor alone mean the Browns will win five more games than they did in 2017?

That's the contention of Profootball Focus (PFF), the analytics site.

Before dismissing it, consider John Dorsey gave several of the same arguments for drafting Baker Mayfield as PFF did when rating Mayfield the top quarterback in the draft.

And the Browns' new general manager traded a third-round pick for Taylor because of many of the attributes favored by PFF -- the former Buffalo quarterback doesn't mess up games.

My favorite stat is that Taylor threw fewer overall interceptions (4) than the Browns threw in the red zone (6).

I'm not going to spend a lot of time on a stat called WAR (Wins Above Replacement) because it becomes very complicated.

But the bottom line is PFF believes Taylor (4.9 WAR) adds five wins to the Browns. Former quarterback DeShone Kizer (minus 2.9 WAR) was solely responsible for three losses because of his excess turnovers.

Not only did Kizer throw an NFL-high 22 interceptions, he also lost seven fumbles. So that's 29 turnovers in 15 games.

In 15 games, Taylor threw four interceptions and lost four fumbles -- a total of eight turnovers.

I was watching a PFF video with Mike Renner and Sam Monson. They were very excited about the Browns, at one point suggesting they could finish 8-8 after they had finished praising the switch from Kizer to Taylor.

They also loved the pick of Denzel Ward. Opposing quarterbacks completed only 35 percent of passes thrown to receivers covered by Ward when he was at Ohio State.

Like Dorsey, they think Ward can become an outstanding cornerback -- quickly.

When the PFF analysts finished, I was waiting for them to paint their faces brown and orange and start barking.

I think 8-8 is way too optimistic. I'm not ready to make a prediction yet, but it won't be that high.

I did a Browns video where I held up a mirror and suggested Browns coach Hue Jackson needs to look into it.

At some point in our lives, all of us must do that.

I still find it hard to believe the expansion Browns of coach Chris Palmer were 5-27 in their first two seasons (1999-2000), but the Browns were 1-31 the last two seasons.

The majority of the blame was on the roster being stripped down and going extremely young.

But not all of it.

That's where Jackson has to take some responsibility beyond his periodic statements of "we have to coach better."

I'm not going to dwell on all the mistakes. I'll simply say one win in two years -- it's not all the fault of the players or the Sashi Brown front office.

The hiring of Todd Haley as offensive coordinator is a major step forward.

Haley had the same job in Pittsburgh for the previous six seasons. He was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Haley knows the the Browns' AFC-North division. He is a strong personality who can handle debates with Jackson.

In his first two years with the Browns, Jackson not only was head coach and offensive coordinator, he seemed to be the quarterback coach.

Too often, he missed the big picture by concentrating on his corner of the game.

There were significant problems with some of Jackson's play calling, especially his love affair with long passes. It was not Jackson's intent, but too often his play-calls put Kizer in position to commit turnovers.

Kizer was 15-of-60 passing (25 percent) throwing at more than 20 yards. He has one TD and seven interceptions.

Taylor is best on medium and short passes.

The Browns also traded for Jarvis Landry, who caught 400 passes over the last four seasons. He is an excellent fit for Taylor, as Landry catches the type of short and medium range passes that are Taylor's specialty.

It's great to have Josh Gordon as a deep pass threat.

But the Browns offense should be built to Taylor's strength, and carried by a strong running game. Dorsey added Carlos Hyde and drafted Nick Chubb, two power runners.

The Browns also re-signed Duke Johnson, an underrated runner and a superb receiver out of the back field.

Use those guys.

And if that happens, the Browns could be one of the NFL's pleasant surprises.

The Cavaliers don't plan to trade Kevin Love?

That's what Cavs General Manager Koby Altman told the media at the Las Vegas Summer League. His point was the team "doesn't get better" by dealing love.

That could be true.

But even if the Cavs were seriously considering dealing Love, why tell the media? That's not a smart way to negotiate a trade.

I talked to a well-known NBA executive about what the Cavs will do with their All-Star forward now that LeBron James has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Unless they get blown away by an offer, I think they'll open the season with Love," said the executive.

Love is in the final season of his $24 million contract. He has a player option of $25.6 million in 2019-2020.

Unless Love suffers a cataclysmic injury, odds are he'll skip the player option and become a free agent in the summer of 2019.

The Cave are rebuilding. So why not just deal Love right now? He turns 30 on Sept. 7.

"Because I think he'll be more in demand during the season by the trading deadline," said the executive. "Kevin could have a very good year for the Cavs being the focal point of the offense. He is a talented player."

The 6-foot-10 Love averaged 17.6 points and 9.0 rebounds last season. He made the All-Star team.

The executive said Love's presence will help rookie point guard Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson and the other Cavs who like to drive to the rim.

Love has 3-point shooting range (41 percent last season). He also is a good passer.

Now that Kyrie Irving and James are gone, Love is the only proven scorer and should have the opportunity to take more shots and show all of his varied skills.

"He remains an excellent defensive rebounder," said the executive. "That also will help the younger players."

The executive's point wasn't that the Cavs should keep Love all season and try to find a way into the playoffs, "unless they don't get much of an offer for Love."

Love getting off to a good start in 2018-19 could increase his trade value as the mid-season deadline approaches. That could lead to a deal where the Cavs are able to add a promising young player and a first-round pick.

The executive said Love could be very appealing to a team needing a star to make the playoffs...or advance deeper in the post-season. That's especially true in the Eastern Conference, where more teams have post-season dreams since James went West to the Lakers.

"The only downside would be if Love had a major injury," said the executive.

That is a concern. Love missed 22 games in 2016-17 and 23 games in 2017-18. He missed games in the 2017 and 2018 playoffs with concussions.

He was injured during the first round of the 2015 playoffs and needed shoulder surgery.

So that's something else the Cavs have to consider.

Right now, I'm guessing Love opens the season with the Cavs - but probably is on another team at the end of the season.

ABOUT COLLIN SEXSON I talked to several NBA executives this week.

I heard Chicago had Sexton rated highly. If Duke's Wendell Carter Jr. had not fallen to the Bulls at No. 7, they probably would have picked the Alabama point guard.

Chicago's starting point guard Zach LaVine is a talented player and a restricted free agent. He signed a 4-year, $78 million offer sheet from Sacramento.

The Bulls also have Kris Dunn at point guard.

So maybe they would not have taken Sexton. But I do know he was under serious consideration by Chicago -- which had hoped Carter would fall to No. 7.

The Cavs drafted Sexton at No. 8.

Another executive told me, "Our basketball people loved Sexton. Our analytics people had some doubts because of his outside shooting. I side with the basketball people on Sexton."

Sexton shot only .336 from 3-point range. The NBA has become a 3-point obsessed league, which is why some teams had doubts about the 6-foot-2 guard.

Other teams (like the Cavs) love Sexton's athleticism, his speed and his excellent character and willingness to be coached.

Sexton had 15 points. He was 4-of-12 shooting, 6-of-6 from the foul line and had seven rebounds. ABOUT THE DRAFT

1. The Cavs 2019 first round draft pick belongs to Atlanta. But it's protected, 1-10. That means if the pick falls in the top 10, the Cavs keep it for 2019. This pick went to Atlanta as part of the Kyle Korver deal in 2017.

2. When discussing the Cavs situation with several executives from other teams, they circled back to that pick. Suppose the Cavs finish 32-50. They miss the playoffs. But they end up with the No. 11 pick -- which goes to Atlanta. That doesn't help the rebuild.

3. One executive said the Cavs should either go for the playoffs -- or go with the young guys and set up the chances to have a top 10 pick. Try not to be caught in the middle.

4. I hear the Cavs are looking to move Korver. He has a contract for $7.5 million this season. In 2019-2020, he also has a $7.5 million deal with $3.4 million guaranteed.

5. Korver would help the Lakers, who need shooters to surround LeBron James. But they keep adding iffy outside shooters: Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson and JaVale McGee. So who knows what they are planning.6. One of my favorite young Cavs players is Ante Zizic. The 6-foot-11 center had a terrific summer league debut with 16 points and 14 rebounds. He has classic big man skills near the basket.7. Cedi Osman came out shooting in Las Vegas. He scored 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting. He was 1-of-6 on 3-pointers. Osman plays a terrific floor game. He had 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists. 8. I will be talking Cavs and everything else Cleveland sports at the Green Library, Monday at 6:30 p.m. My next appearance is Tuesday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Burton Library. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- LeBron James leaves the Cavaliers have playing more regular season games than anyone else in franchise history. That's important to remember when putting his Cleveland career in perspective. James agreed to a four-year contract to play for the Los Angeles Lakers last weekend. Eleven of his 15 NBA seasons have been with the Cavaliers. Here comes the top five:1. LeBron James, 849 games.2. Zydrunas Ilgauskas, 771 games.3. Danny Ferry, 723 games.4. Bingo Smith, 720 games.5. John "Hot Rod" Williams, 661 games.Other than James, the only player on that list to make an All-Star team was Ilguaskas (2003, 2005). Or how about this? The last time the Cavaliers made the playoffs without James was 1998.

The last time the Cavaliers won a playoff series without James was 1993.

In his 11 Cavs seasons, James took his team to the NBA Finals five times. The Cavs never reached The Finals without James on the roster."And the championship," said Jim Paxson. "Unless you are from Northeast Ohio or worked there as I did, you can't full understand what that meant to the city."Paxson was the Cavs general manager in 2003 when they won the lottery and the rights to James. A Dayton native, he is Director of Basketball Operations for the Chicago Bulls. The 2016 NBA title was the first in Cavs history. The franchise began in 1970.It was the first championship for any major Cleveland pro sports team since the 1964 Browns."I've watched him take some teams to the Finals and wondered, 'How did he do that?'" said Paxson. "Eight consecutive trips to the Finals is phenomenal."And James did it with two teams (Miami and Cleveland) and three coaches (Erik Spoelstra, David Blatt and Tyronn Lue).

As we think about James leaving for the Lakers, I talked to some people who knew him early in his Cavs career.

It's natural James was 21 years old when Mike Brown was named the Cavaliers' coach in 2005."He was so young," said Brown. "But he was also so smart. He was a tireless worker. It was hard to believe he was only two years out of high school."

Now the top assistant to Golden State Coach Steve Kerr, Brown came up with a different comparison to James."Tim Duncan," said Brown, referring to the former San Antonio star center. They were together when Brown was a Spurs assistant coach."Certain players just have that special feel for the game," said Brown. "Tim Duncan had it. And when I was with LeBron, I saw the same thing. They seem to know what will happen almost before it happens."

Keith Dambrot has known James since he was in the eighth grade. Dambrot coached James for two years at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. He is now the head coach at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

"He has an incredible combination of being instinctive and being willing to learn," said Dambrot. "He's always been like that. He has a special brain."

Dambrot talked about the physical gifts of James. While he's 6-foot-8 and always was one of the tallest kids on his team, he never had an uncoordinated stage.

"Not many have his natural ability," said Dambrot. "But some come close. But they don't have that special brain and drive that I have always seen in LeBron."

A painful lesson Brown was the first coach who was taken to the NBA Finals. That was in 2007."People said this last (Cavs) team had the least talent of any of LeBron's other (Finals) teams," said Brown. "I wish we had a player like Kevin Love on our roster back then."The 2006-07 Cavs started Larry Hughes and Sasha Pavolic in the backcourt. Ilgauskas was the center. The forward were Drew Golden and James. The top substitutes were Anderson Varejao, Daniel Gibson, Eric Snow and Donyell Marshall.Brown believes the 2007 Finals were critical to the career of James. The Cavs were swept in four games by the Spurs.James averaged 22 points, shooting only .356 from the field. He was 4-of-20 (20 percent) on 3-pointers.Brown explained how the Spurs were daring James to shoot medium-range jumpers on pick-and-roll plays."Their defense was dropping inside the foul line on him," said Brown. "It was a sign of disrespect. LeBron knew it. And he really went to work on improving his jump shot after that."

There was an interesting exchange between Duncan and James after Game 4 of the 2007 Finals.

"One day, this league will be yours," Duncan told James. Time to man up Brown was on the Golden State bench the last two years when his team faced James and the Cavs in the NBA Finals."He's so much more confident now," said Brown. "Not just on the court, but off it. When I coached him, LeBron had not won a title yet. He was still a young player. He wanted to win. He worked hard. But he was still learning the things that we saw later when he came back to Cleveland."

Dambrot believes James leaving the Cavs for Miami in 2010 changed his career.

"He went with some guys who knew how to win," said Dambrot. "Guys like Pat Riley and Dwyane Wade. He was out of his comfort zone. He wasn't the Golden Child playing at home any more."James spent four years in Miami with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. They were expected to win. When James floundered in the 2011 NBA Finals loss to Dallas, he came back the next season determined to be a champion. He led the Heat to a pair of titles in the next two years.

"He faced adversity," said Dambrot. "He learned not everyone loved him. Then it came time for him to man-up, and he did."

James returned to the Cavs in the summer of 2014. In the four seasons when James was in Miami and always in the Finals, the Cavs had the NBA's worst overall record in that span. "He came back to Cleveland and delivered," said Brown. "I remember when I coached there (from 2005-10 and in 2013-14), fans would ask me how long before a Cleveland team would win a title."Brown laughed, then explained."They asked if it would be during their father's lifetime," he said. "Or their lifetime. We're talking about waiting decades!"Brown lived in Northeast Ohio from 2005-15, keeping a home there even when he coached the Lakers. "Only people who are from there understand what that title meant," said Brown. "To LeBron, I bet it's worth more than all his MVP awards (four) and his other titles (in Miami) combined."

Dambrot agreed.

"There's nothing better than winning at home," he said.

Sense of freedom Paxson mentioned an aspect of James' career that has dictated his career moves."LeBron changed the system," said Paxson. "He is the first player to take control of his own destiny. He's a global icon."James and his advisors consistently negotiated contracts that gave him options to leave early. He signed a six-year deal with Miami in 2010, but he had the option to leave after four seasons. With the Cavaliers, he signed short-term deals. Those gave him a chance to maximize his salary and also leave if he desired.

Dambrot knows the Lakers present more business opportunities for James because the iconic franchise is in Los Angeles.

"But I think there is a basketball side to it," said Dambrot. "LeBron knows no player has ever won titles with three different NBA teams. He can be the first if he does that with the Lakers. It's a different way of chasing Michael Jordan's legacy."While James has spent 11 of his 15 NBA seasons with the Cavs, some fans are still hurt by the fact that he's left them twice."Winning that title in Cleveland allowed him to leave this time," said Brown. "Mentally and emotionally, it was a cleansing for him."Brown meant James knew he made mistakes with how he left the Cavs 2010, announcing it on the self-absorbed "Decision" show on ESPN. "LeBron is from Akron," said Brown. "He always knew how long fans were waiting for a title. He came back determined to change that."And he did.The career of James will always be debated. In Cleveland, there will debates of why the team didn't win more titles with him. Whose fault was it?Nationally, it's often a debate of who is the greatest of all-time -- Michael Jordan or James?"I wish we wouldn't play the comparison game when it comes to LeBron," said Paxson. "We should embrace what he has done. He came into the league with tremendous expectations, and he's exceeded all of those."Cavs fans should be able to agree at least on that much.

At the request of ArchbishopJohn C Wester, a candidate can select only one (1) sponsor (no exceptions). The role of a confirmation sponsor is not a special token of family relationship or friendship. Your sponsor must be an active, baptized, and confirmed Catholic whom you see regularly; someone who will be with you to share faith experiences during your time of preparation for confirmation, as well as after confirmation. Your Sponsor should be someone who understands you; someone with whom you can talk to easily, confide in, share your faith with, and who will encourage and support you before and after confirmation. It is important to select your sponsor as soon as possible so that he/she may be with you, guide you, and participate with you in your preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, the sign of your initiation into the full life and membership of the Church. It is the responsibility of your sponsor to show you, in a friendly way, the place of the gospel in his/her own life, to help in doubts and anxieties, to give public testimony for the candidate, and to watch over the progress of the confirmed life. Your SPONSOR must fulfill the following criteria: 1. Be a person of faith and a baptized and confirmed Catholic. 2. Cannot be one of your parents. 3. Be a registered and active member of their parish faith community and provide proof (signed permission letter from their pastor) by November 15, 2017. Sponsors who are members of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi must call Liz Gallegos (955-8864) to get permission. 4. If married, the sponsor must have been married in the Roman Catholic Church. 5. Make the journey of faith with you and establish a life-long relationship. 6. Be at least 21 years old; however, if circumstances warrant it, the pastor may permit a person 16 years or older to serve as sponsor. 7. Participate in at least 15 hours of community/church service with you. 8. Attend all sessions indicated for sponsors and keep track of your community/church service hours. 9. Meet periodically with you to share faith and discuss issues or problems. 10. Attend the Presentation Ceremony with you at the 10:00 AM Mass onFebruary 26,2017. 11. Pay $75.00 for the weekend retreat, covers for room and meals. If this is burden for your sponsor, contact the Director of Youth Ministry or the pastor. 12.
